Dementia 13

When Louise Haloran's husband dies unexpectedly she hatches a plot to secure the family fortune for herself by meeting his relatives in Ireland. But after witnessing a weird family ritual in honour of her long drowned sister in law, Louise (Luana Anders) soon realises the Halorans may be the kookiest family since Addams was a boy. Such suspicions are confirmed when one-by-one family members turn up dismembered!

More than a decade before The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Friday the 13th there was Dementia 13 often hailed as the Gran'pappy of all slasher flicks. Though designed by schlock-master Roger Corman (Little Shop of Horrors) as a cheap exploitation quickie, Dementia 13 endured to become an influential horror classic. Unlike most of its cheaply made contemporaries, Dementia 13 is soaked with sinister atmospherics and nail biting suspense thanks to the budding talents of Francis Ford Coppola, here making his directorial debut but soon to become one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of all time.

Carnival of Souls
A young woman (Candace Hilligoss) in a small Kansas town survives a drag race accident, then agrees to take a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she is haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by industrial filmmakers on a small budget, the eerily effective B-movie classic Carnival of Souls was intended to have "the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau" - and, with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score, it succeeds. Herk Harvey's macabre masterpiece gained a cult following on late-night television and continues to inspire filmmakers today.
