For a band that was so serious and bent on destroying the IRAback in the 80's, these guys needed to have a little fun. A releasefrom the stress. They created ZOO TV. Zoo's a good word for what'sgoing on here as the 180-strong road crew puts the final touches on1992's most spectacular production, which comes with its ownmini-TV station (under the stage), four mega video screens andanother four video walls, three dozen monitors, five cameras, asatellite dish, 11 Trabants (East German mini-cars made out ofcompressed cardboard) and a video crew of 18. The indoor version ofthe Zoo Tour sold $13 million worth of tickets; that total isexpected to quadruple on the outdoor leg, which includes sold outdates Saturday and Sunday at Robert F Kennedy Memorial Stadium inWashington DC. This dvd captures the Sunday show (16th of August1992) at RFK. Fans will be blown away on the first sight. The stageis massive and there are large TV screens everywhere on this yellowand red coloured stadium, adding life to the worst area of DC. The248-by-80-foot stage is cluttered with the 1,200 tons ofrock-and-roll paraphernalia delivered to this town in 52tractor-trailers. The overall effect, now on an even grander scalethan the indoor shows, takes rock-and-roll beyond performance artinto what lead singer Bono Hewson calls "a ridiculous over-the-topexercise." That's quite a contrast from the band's Dublin roots, when "our equipment used to fit into an orange Volkswagen Beetlewith a roof rack," muses bassist Adam Clayton. "And Edge's motherwas our first roadie," Bono says of the guitarist's mom. "Mrs.Edge, as she was known. An incredible character. People thought shewas eccentric. We'd get home at 5 in the morning and my old manwould be waiting with a machete, but Edge's mom would arrive, wipethe sleep out of her eye and ask everyone whether they'd eaten atall." No such problem these days: Not only does U2 fly between jobsin a private jet, its catering crew is probably larger than thefirst audience the band ever played for. Once upon a time, U2 couldset up in a matter of minutes; now it takes 200 people 40 hoursjust to set up the stage. They've come a long way from 1980's "Boy"to last year's "Achtung, Baby," from teenagers playing at Dublin'sDandelion Green to thirtyish veterans selling out the country'slargest stadiums in minutes. Zoo TV is the summer's hottest ticketas well as the new wave in stadium rock. The two shows at RFK hadPrimus and Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy as opening act and asmentioned before both shows were sold out meaning an attendance: of48,519 people. Unfortunately for the fans and for the opening actsit was raining and quite massive. Many avoided the opening actstrying to get out of the rain and hoping it would let up. Betweenthe last opening act and U2 it started to rain even harder and manywere afraid the band would cancel their show at last minute butthen the light went out and President Bush appeared on several ofthe huge TV screens, chanting We Will We Will Rock You, to the beatof the Queen song, which lead into the beginning of Zoo Station. Mygod, I've never heard such deafening screams coming from the 40,000plus in attendance. The show was amazing and most people had faineven though the heavy rain. U2 also played both Bad and SundayBloody Sunday which was the only time during the tour they did bothshows. They also had the acoustic set on a tiny set with a beautiful belly dancer that had to dance on a wet stage. Bono wasntin the best mood and this was because of the rain, afraid that allthe power along with the rain might shock all 40,000 fans to deathin the world's largest electrocution. It also had the TV screensworking only part of the time. But Bono thanked the fans andespecially the crew for enduring the endless rain and it was anexperience that i think few will ever forget
