Tibetan Freedom Concert is the name given to a series of rockfestivals held in North America, Europe and Asia from 1996 onwardsto support the cause of Tibetan independence. The concerts wereoriginally organized by the Beastie Boys and the Milarepa Fund. Theidea for a Live Aid-style concert for Tibet was conceived bymembers of the group during the 1994 Lollapalooza Tour. Organizedin 1996, the first concert was held in June in San Francisco andfeatured acts such as The Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers,Björk, Smashing Pumpkins, Cibo Matto, Rage Against the Machine, ATribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker. Itdrew 100,000 people and raised over $800,000 for Tibetan and socialjustice causes. Additional concerts were held until 2003,generating public awareness about the Tibetan plight, particularlyamongst young people. The concerts helped spur the growth ofStudents for a Free Tibet worldwide. Radiohead performed at theTibetan Freedom Concert at the RFK Memorial Stadium in Washingtonon the 14th of June 1998. But just hours before Saturday´s start,the nation´s capital was being pounded by torrential downpours.Weather reports were grim and by the time Herbie Hancock and theHeadhunters were funking up the stage (as part of the group´stwenty-fifth anniversary reunion), a fat rain was falling. Just asHancock introduced special guest Guru (from Gang Starr) for somefree-form jazzhop, a bolt of lightning slammed into the crowd.Herbie & Co. were quickly ushered from the stage, ambulancessearching for wounded weaved through the infield and after an hourthe calm voice of R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe announced the rest of thedays cancellation. Luckily Sunday's weather was better and the bandcut their setlist to make room for the Satuday acts that were atthe stadium, some acts were stuck at other towns as they had tostop all flights to Washington on Saturday. The Wallflowers, SeanLennon, Pulp and Sonic Youth received very little audience responseduring their muffled sets, and it wasn´t until Radiohead showed up,originally scheduled for Saturday, that the fans started enjoyingthemselves. Lead singer Thom Yorke was masterful, offering chillingtakes on "Karma Police," "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" and an extended"Creep," a song stricken from recent performances. Stipejoined the band to sing lead on "Lucky," perfectly capturing thespirit of such a hot-ticket event.This dvd features this show aswell as tons of other videos and live material.
