ABOUT THE STUDIES SERIES
Ash has a particular, cyclical curiosity that manifests as 'studies' of existing major art works. The process isn't about precision or forgery, rather it concerns an unearthing of knowledge tied up within a canvas together with the creation of a continuation of a work's energy. The focus is on the aura of a work, or the emotional capacity, life or zeal.
Ash sometimes departs from the original midway through a Study. Other times he persists with notions of accuracy.
"The Study is a variant of the original. Just as the original changes its appearance to who is looking at it, what light is falling upon it, what other work happens to be curated near, what other human actions are going on in the vicinity or any larger context. And with even greater dispersion of the notion of variation, any printed or screen based versions will offer a growing myriad of different appearances and qualities. Hence I believe that no version of a work is ever really the same, even the original." - Ash
Previous Studies include paintings by Henri Matisse, Patrick Heron, Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Vrubel and Vilhelm Hammershøi.
