2013 re-issue with lyric insert

Like their eponymous debut of a year before, Bathorys 1985sophomore effort, The Return&&, was an unbelievably coarseproto-black metal album influenced almost exclusively by theearlier works of Venom. But make no mistake: such was the genresstate of infancy at the time that, even though it was once againrecorded under the most inadequate of circumstances at the autorepair garage Quorthon sympathetically baptized HeavenshoreStudios, the albums impact still proved nothing short ofrevolutionary. Even more than that, The Return&& effectivelyrepresented chapter two in the Scandinavian black metal historybook; with virtually all of its sonic tenets from the sataniclyrics, hoarse shrieks, buzz-saw guitars, and high-speed drumscharacterizing demonic punk-thrashers like Possessed, Reap ofEvil, and Son of the Damned, to the evocatively titled intropiece, Revelation of Doom (all rumbling bass noises and torturedscreams) later regurgitated like bloody gospel by legions ofloyal younger musicians. And if its true that several trackssuffered a little more glaringly from those substandard productionstandards (notably the off-time mid-section of The Rite ofDarkness), when they contained the slightly more distinctive riffor chorus, album highlights such as Born for Burning, Sadist,the masterful The Return of the Darkness and Evil, and even thealmost laughingly Venom-derived Bestial Lust (Bitch), became andremain irresistible slices of primeval black metal to this day.Latter-day black metal enthusiasts may wonder what all the fuss isabout, given the above being such ingrained and mundane aspects ofthe genre they now know; but thats exactly what confirms TheReturn&&s seminal stature in the annals of extreme metal.
