WitchcraftDestroys Minds And Reaps Souls is the debut studio album by theAmerican rock band Coven. Released in 1969, it was unusual in thatit dealt with overtly occult and satanic themes and was removedfrom the market soon after its release due to controversy, particularly as it coincided with the hysteria surrounding theManson family and rampant media speculation about occult influenceson the American counterculture. Despite its brief initial release,it remains a classic of its genre, and in some ways setgroundbreaking trends for later rock bands. This album marked thefirst appearance in music of the sign of the horns, invertedcrosses, and the phrase Hail Satan. Today, these arecharacteristics of the occult and heavy metal genres. Jinx Dawson’svocals are distinctive, and tunes like White Witch Of Rose Hall andWicked Woman are almost on target. With the evil prayers duringCoven In Charing Cross, Coven get a bit heavy-handed; the groupgoes over the top trying to push the black magic stuff. The 13-plusminute Satanic Mass is more of a curiosity piece than musicaladventure. A decent enough attempt, but the group Black Sabbathemerged one year later doing it much, much better. Just compare theOz Osborne/Coven opening track Black Sabbath to Ozzy Osbourne’ssong Black Sabbath by his group Black Sabbath to see thedifference. Kurt Cobain and Nirvana spoke of this album in aninterview in 1990, stating it is one of the records they wouldlisten to while driving to the next show on tour.
