"Dark Guardian" is a series centered around a society of werewolves known as Shifters, who reside in a hidden compound called Wolford along the Canada–United States border. The Shifters possess enhanced abilities but are vulnerable to silver and attacks from within their own community. Upon reaching maturity, they either integrate into human society or work as forest guides to protect their secret.

Shifters typically transform into wolves rather than anthropomorphic creatures, with their first transformation occurring around the age of 17 or 18, followed by the ability to change at will. Males traditionally experience their first transformation alone and then choose a mate to guide through her transformation, often leading to a romantic bond.

Some Shifters become Dark Guardians, tasked with defending Wolford and keeping it hidden from outsiders. Each novel in the series follows a protagonist and their relationship with a love interest, while also exploring the conflicts between the Dark Guardians and adversaries like the research organization Bio-Chrome.
