The concepts and theories of modern democracy
Anthony H. Birch
Routledge 1995. Mjuk pärm 260 sidor. Mycket gott skick.
ISBN 041509108X
What does political freedom really mean? Can there be a science of politics?
"This book is the fruit of a lifetime's reflection on politics. Birch has unfailingly sensible things to say about the main theoretical issues that the discipline of political science has thrown up in recent decades. The book will form an admirably clear and comprehensive introduction to the study of politics. But those familiar with the field will also profit from Birch's mature thoughts on the controversies that have shaped the subject.'
Professor Brian Barry, Department of Government, London School of Economics and Political Science
"This is an impressive book... it is balanced in judgements, is rooted in careful examination of evidence and texts, and yet never loses sight of the largest issues."
Professor Michael Moran, Department of Government, University of Manchester
'Professor Birch has written a manual for actual or aspiring democrats. He brings us down from the realms of rhetoric and cliche to the deeper and more difficult conceptual questions and conundrums that any democrat must face.
Professor Terence Ball, Department of Political Science, University of Minnesota
Anthony H. Birch was educated in London and pursued postdoctoral studies at Harvard and the University of Chicago. He has taught political science at the universities of Manchester, Hull and Exeter, at Tufts University in Massachusetts, at the University of Western Australia and at the University of Victoria in Canada. He has published seven previous books, has served as Vice-President of the International Political Science Association, and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
