Leviathan is an American Suicidal BlackMetal band. Like the better known Xasthur, Leviathan’s focus isatmosphere. However, the way the two largest bands in the genre goabout their depressive task varies greatly. Xasthur uses a wall ofsound, low fi production and synths to create what is almostambient music created with metal instruments. Leviathan, on theother hand, doesn’t forgo traditional riffs on their quest fordarkness. Instead, they meld atmospheric sections, ambiance, andcrushing metal riffs into their music. With Leviathan’s firstofficial album (The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide) they focused moreon the atmospheric portion of their sound. The entire album flowedtogether as one track, and its effect was incredible. This timearound, the focus is more on the riffs and the ambient sections aresuperb, although there aren’t as many of them as there were in thefirst album. ‘Tentacles Of Whorror’ spans over an hour, but nevergets old. It truly immerses you in its dark world, and you won’twant to leave this hellish landscape ever again after you firstglimpse its hideous charm. This album stands head and shouldersabove the majority of black metal and this is highly recommendedfor any fan of black metal.
