Deadman,from Austin Texas, are a powerful force on the folk and roots rockscene of Austin, Texas. Their tight sound is reminiscent of TheBand, which effortlessly brings together Southern Rock, Texas Folk,Country Rock and 70es old school rock n roll is certainlyconvincing to anyone flying the Americana flag. Their 2011 album,Take Up Your Mat And Walk, is focusing on the band’s in-the-studioquality and its recorded in a very natural 70es fashion andrecorded on analog equipment without outside production help. Halfof the tunes are presented in a relaxed, off-the-cuff folk andcountry rock atmosphere. This is particularly remarkable on thetrack Ain’t No Music, which sounds like a forgotten outtake ofSpringsteen’s Nebraska. The heretofore unheard songs Till TheMorning Comes and I’m Not Who You Think I Am are breezy alt.countryrock numbers, firmly rooted in the 70s but with a certain NoDepression-generation extra. This World’s Gonna Change reminds thelistener even of Dylan’s Visions Of Johanna – at least until JasonHildebrand’s gruff electric guitar alludes to the sound of UncleTupelo. Gilead is the album’s most accessible song, once againcomparable to The Band. We All Need Love boasts a strong four-partharmony vocal and a rolling Hammond organ while Steven Collinsvocals compete with the horn section in a manner not unlike VanMorrison’s.
The album closer of Take Up Your Mat And Walk is the title trackand with more than five minutes playing time the album’s longestnumber, replete with Band-feeling, a Poco-like guitar part and anirresistible melody. With exceptional composability, sweet vocalsfrom Steven Collins, Organ and Mandolin it shows the heartwarmingroots and music sound of Texas Austin is a tear-droppingexperience. A great way to bring back to the good old times andshows how wonderful pure nostalgia can sound.
