Conclusions

Philips’ first low-bit exposition is probably its best ever machine, and is priced competitively enough to deserve Best Buy status. It does sound different from the multi-bit machines, but not necessarily superior to similarly priced alternatives from Arcam and Marantz. Those contemplating buying a mid-priced CD player should certainly audition the CD840, but also some of its rivals, before making up their own minds on the subject
