ABOUT THE MOVIE

Daughter of the Mother (1989) is a Portuguese movie by João Canijo.

Most of the sequences in this movie were shot in spaces of a residential building at Rua do Ilha do Príncipe nº 7, in Lisbon, designed by architect Jorge Ferreira Chaves. This artwork was chosen for decor in several other Portuguese films.

Sentimental comedy, police intrigue and marital tragedy, this film tells the story of Maria (Rita Blanco), a comic, aggressive, cynical and sentimental woman.

She has a boyfriend, Adriano (João Cabral), who is dedicated to small trafficing and theft. Her mother is Julia (Lídia Franco), an insecure actress who has the occasional lover Gigi (Miguel Guilherme), actor and drug addict, always broke and heartbroken between Julia and Dalila, her stagemate. His father is Álvaro (José Wilker), a painter who after having been missing for twenty years in Brazil wants to return to Julia as if nothing had happened and runs into a daughter who does not know if he is his real father and who, almost without knowing falls into his arms.
