Sad Minstrel is the solo debut of Malombra’s Fabio Casanova.Fabio wants to create progressive folk music with his new sideproject. Think of flute and heavy tempo passages somewhatreminiscent of seventies Jethro Tull mixed with digital keyboardand programmed drums sequences ala Alan Parsons around the sametime period, but overlaid with both English and Italian vocals ofan emotive and bard-like Latin singer, plus lyrics that tend towarddark fanciful themes in the vein of Aqualung or Broadsword And TheBeast and you’ll have a sense of what this album sounds like. Sortof. But although comparisons can be made to individual facets ofthese tracks, nobody I can think of has managed to put all of themtogether into a single album. That is, until the Sad Minstrel camealong. The title track, in which Casanova melds chanting andshouting vocals with a persistent beat and heavy guitar in arollicking version of the mythical Phoenix’s tale of destructionand resurrection, all with a uniquely Italian warm-blooded sense oftheatrics and passion, is a truly inspiring piece of music. Theopening track is more subdued in tone, but a read of the lyricssheds some light on the dark nature of these songs: Betrayed byfalse friends after timeless deceptions, by witches and bitches heonce loved so much; by the cyclical tricks of his privateobsessions – he watched in the mirror and saw his brain crack.Overall this is a charming and engaging collection of animated andvibrant folk-tinged tunes with very modern treatments. Any fan ofprogressive music fan that wont mind some folk influences should adthis to his/her collection.
