Although they´ve wallowed in the shadows of better-knownScandinavian extreme metal bands like Emperor and Dimmu Borgir dueto inferior promotion and internal problems, Sweden´s Mörk Gryninghave accomplished quite a bit over the course of their four-albumcareer. Like these and other champions of that region´s excitinglocal scene, Mörk Gryning´s core creative duo of Goth Gorgon andDraakh Kimera meld death and black metal with a vast array of lessobvious styles: industrial, doom, symphonic, and even moretraditional thrash metal riffing among them. While proving somewhatdifficult to digest at times, this eclectic sonic soup is certainlynever boring, and often downright thrilling. Opener "The SleepingStar," for instance, smacks of Swiss death metal industrialistsSamael jamming with Paradise Lost, while the furiously paced blackmetal of "The Cradle of Civilization" bridges the gap betweenDimmu´s complex orchestrations and Marduk´s straightforwardbludgeoning before descending into a delicately mournful, stringquartet-led coda. The same variety of disparate stylistic trickspermeates the reigning, primal aggression underpinning every singlesong that follows, be it the hypnotically organic grooves of "OurUrn," the dense harmonies and ambient nuances of "An Old Man´sLament," the fancy-free power chords and chorused vocals of "TheWorm," or even the gothic overtones and Baroque keyboards heard on"Fragments and Pieces." Simply put, the resourceful invention to befound on Pieces of Primal Expressionism can easily challenge anyand all of Mörk Gryning´s competition in modern extreme metal.
