Hailingfrom the extreme metal hotbed of Australia, Mongrels Cross are oneof the best-kept secrets Down Under. Mind you, the band – now pareddown to a duo – have been quiet since the release of their 2012album, The Sins Of Aquarius. But those years away from the pryingeyes of the metal public have paid off in spades on Psalter Of TheRoyal Dragon Court. Here, these hooligans take everything that madeThe Sins Of Aquarius so grimily gratifying – the widescreen span offilthy thrashing, down-tempo war-marches, and epic metal grandeuralike – and render it all the more terrifying and triumphantthrough clear n cutting production. It’s the age-old axis of formmeeting content, and rarely has a metal record this cleanlyproduced sounded so threatening, which simply underlines thepowerful panache to the band’s strong songwriting. Taken anotherway, with this album the band step deeper into territory that’sentirely their own. Not for them the over-generalization ofAustralia = war metal nor the simplistic connotations associatedwith such; no, the duo are at the height of their compositionalpowers and are now truly a great extreme metal entity. All thedrama and danger, legendry and lawlessness, power and poison, andessential over the top abandon of this artform otherwise known asheavy metal: everything is played out with a palpably physicalpoetry across Psalter Of The Royal Dragon. Suitably, its lyricalthemes range a rich panoply of occultism – among others, suchtitles as Vessel Of Shar On, Neurian Transformation and Derkesthai– Initiation (To See Clearly) should suggest plenty – making this athoroughly engrossing experience deserving of the band’s elevatedstandards.
